RiverMuse installation and upgrade

RiverMuse Core 4.2

If your system meets the following requirements, to install a prebuilt version of Core please proceed to the Red Hat 5CentOS 5 prebuilt install core instructions; otherwise, to build and then install Core, please refer to Red Hat 5 CentOS 5 building and installing core 4.2 instructions.

Prerequisites

RiverMuse processes require that certain ports are opened in your firewall to allow traffic. These ports may be blocked by default firewall configurations.

The following table describes the ports that need to be open for specific processes.

Configuring your firewall

Via the command line

  1. From your terminal window you need to type:
  • To navigate inside a window use the tab key, and to select an option use the space bar.
  1. From the Firewall Configuration window, ensure the Security Level is Enabled.
  2. From the Firewall Configuration window, select Customize.
  3. Tab down to Other ports.
  4. On the Other Ports command lind, you need to manually add additional ports using the following format:

    Please use the table above as a guide to which ports you need to open. Once you have added the additional ports, select OK.

  5. From the Firewall Configuration window, select OK. Please consider your existing firewall configuration before selecting OK.

Via the GUI

  1. From the menu bar select System, and then the Administration option.
  2. From the Administration sub menu, click on Security Level and Firewall.
  3. From teh Security Level Configuration window, ensure Firewall is set to Enabled.
  4. From the Trusted services window, tick the check box against WWW (HTTP).
  5. Click on the Other Ports option. In the main window, click on Add.
  6. From the Add Port pop up window, add the Port number(s) and Protocol(s) in the relevant fields, using the table above as a guide to which ports you need to open. Click on OK.
  7. Repeat until all ports have been added.
  8. Click on Apply. Click on Yes to override the existing firewall configuration. Please consider your existing firewall configuration before selecting Yes.

System requirements

Before you install the software you must ensure that the system on which you are installing RiverMuse meets the minimum hardware and software requirements. Please be advised these are only guidelines as the actual specifications will depend on the size of your database and retention policy. The following system requirements are RiverMuse's recommended minimums.

Hardware requirements

  • RiverMuse recomends a minimum of 2 GB of swap on a dedicated machine but only to page out quiescent processes. If Rivermuse is sharing the host, the swap will need to be adjusted according to the other resident applications.
  • Dual core CPU
  • 4GB RAM
  • 250 GB Hard disk space to store the software
  • 250 GB Hard disk space for DB storage
  • AMD Opteron or Intel Xeon Processor with External Cache

Software requirements

  • RiverMuse currently supports:
    • Fedora 11 and 12 Linux operating system. A Fedora system update is recommended after the initial installation of the operating system.
    • Red Hat 5/CentOS 5. RiverMuse assumes you have a RHEL 5 system that is either a workstation or server, and is connected to the RetHat Network and have permissions for updates, or that you are using an equivalent alternative ( Centos ).
    • For Core 4.2.2, Fedora 13 Linux operating system. A Fedora system update is still advised after the initial installation of the operating system.

Additional requirements

RiverMuse currently supports the following browsers:

RiverMuse will support any operating system version that is capable of supporting the specified browsers.

Please be advised currently when running Internet Explorer (IE)7, IE8, or, Firefox in a Windows XP environment, RiverMuse has recorded unusually high levels of memory usage. To assist in managing this issue, RiverMuse recommends if you run the desktop over night, you Freeze the Alert Console.
